QUEST OVERSEAS

Description

Have a passion for languages? Thrive off environmental conservation, construction and helping the survival of others? Or is good old fashioned outdoorsy adventure your kind of thing? Then check out Quest Overseas' gap year programmes and summer projects across South America and Africa.

Quest Overseas is looking for all the language lovers, the eco-friendly minded, and the world traveling thrill seekers to join their team!

“Quest was an easy decision for me because of its language + volunteering + expedition combo – it was the only company I found which did all three in one! The whole 3 months were crazy busy with hardly a moment to spare so I felt I really got my money’s worth, and they were very clear about where every penny gets spent” Jessica Bailey, Villa Maria Gap Adventure 2011

Quest Overseas fights poverty and the destruction of the environment in Africa and South America. Volunteers and projects include:

Transforming the lives of children living in poverty in Peru through workshops and education.

Climbing, swimming, crawling, surfing and laughing your way across South America on the Andean expedition.

Supporting children in Malawi through school by building schools and child sponsorship.

Working hard to protect the environment and rescued animals in Bolivia through construction and care.

Assisting with scientific research and sustainable agricultural initiatives in the Manu region of the Peruvian Amazon.

Building a new home for street children orphaned by the genocide in Rwanda.

GLOBE AWARE, ADVENTURES IN SERVICE

Description

Globe Aware develops short-term volunteer programs in international environments that encourage people to immerse themselves in a unique way of giving back, focusing on the principles of cultural awareness and sustainability. This process naturally instills in them values to become lifelong advocates for a better world. Simultaneously the volunteers help to empower the host communities in creating renewable, sustainable programmes. Globe Aware's financial assistance benefits the community economically, but it is actually the involvement and collaboration between volunteers and the community that is of the greatest mutual benefit. We believe that understanding other cultures helps everyone to create better-informed solutions, not to mention leading a more enjoyable life!

Globe Aware adventures provide volunteers the opportunity to live and work side by side with a host community and to develop a real appreciation for cultures unlike our own. The host provides a safe and interesting setting in which to learn, help and have fun! The communities with whom we work choose the projects that they feel are most important to develop. The work is varied and can encompass everything from helping provide a better life for captive elephants in Thailand, playing word games with Peruvian children, planting trees in India, to painting a community centre in Costa Rica, amongst many other activities. We feel it is of supreme importance to respect the culture and heritage in which the volunteer is working. The goal is not for volunteers to change the host communities, but rather to help them in the needs that the host community has identified as important. Those who will enjoy the experience the most are those who bring an open mind and willingness to help. The natural healthy exchange of ideas and opinions leads to a mutual understanding of cultures.

VOLUNTEER LATIN AMERICA

Description

Volunteer Latin America provide free and low-cost work abroad opportunities in Central and South America. We aim to connect volunteers to some of the best grassroots projects in the environmental and humanitarian sectors.

The environmental projects we offer are as varied and interesting as you might imagine, ranging from forestry to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. A multitude of other opportunities exist in a diverse range of species, habitats and locations. As well as offering a vast range of environmental projects, we offer volunteers the opportunity to help the economically, socially and politically disadvantaged people of the region by providing a wide variety of humanitarian work. There are opportunities to get involved in child welfare, community development, education and health programmes.

The projects we offer either require the volunteer to make a small financial contribution (participation fee), are free but volunteers are responsible for covering their own living expenses, or provide complimentary accommodation and food.

Projects vary in length from one week up to a full year. Most of the projects we offer are from one month to three months; however, there are opportunities to volunteer for shorter or longer periods of time.

Because we help hundreds of grassroots organisations find people willing to help them achieve their objectives, we support environmental conservation and local community development in the region. Without the support and commitment of volunteers many of these organisations would be unable to carry out their vital work.

Ninth Wave Global

Description

Ninth Wave Global is an independent, international organisation and think tank which works in unknown or forgotten territories over the horizon, generating space for investigation and positive change in environmental, community and social settings. We currently work in Europe, the Americas and Australasia, encouraging quiet, humble and slow exploration of places and people, opening up space for people to recognise shared humanity, needs and aspirations, culminating in concrete programs of local-led, grass-roots developmental projects fundamentally based on local horizons, not imported value systems or solutions.

Having worked in territories over the horizon with remote communities for many years, we fundamentally believe that all meaningful change is necessarily slow, locally-led, attitude-and-aspiration-based. Communities with appropriate resources and assistance are capable of generating the autonomous power to develop systems for themselves. As such, working with communities primarily in the Americas, Ninth Wave is intent not on generating change per se, but on identifying and empowering people who are capable of generating change for themselves and their communities.

CAMPHILL VILLAGE MINNESOTA

Description

The mission of Camphill Village Minnesota is to create and sustain a community where people with and without disabilities live, work, and care for each other to foster social, cultural and agricultural renewal. This village is an intentional community of approximately 55 people, including adults with developmental disabilities. The community is based on the belief that every individual, regardless of ability, is a spiritual being, worthy of dignity and respect. Developmental disabilities are treated not as illnesses, but as part of the fabric of human experience, and all members of the community are cared for in the context of a healthy home and village life. Camphill springs from the holistic worldview of Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), called Anthroposophy. Camphill is located on a 500 acre working farm ten miles north of Sauk Centre in central Minnesota. People live together family-style in seven different homes. Everyone shares in the responsibilities of life in the community. The village has a strong agricultural component made up of farming and gardening. Craft work includes weaving and woodwork, as well as a bakery that provides for the needs of the village and sells in the surrounding area. Life in the village revolves around the cycles of nature and the Christian festivals which are connected with the changing seasons. Plays, concerts, lectures and continuing education add depth and color to the fabric of the community.
