VOLUNTEER LATIN AMERICA

Description

Volunteer Latin America provide free and low-cost work abroad opportunities in Central and South America. We aim to connect volunteers to some of the best grassroots projects in the environmental and humanitarian sectors.

The environmental projects we offer are as varied and interesting as you might imagine, ranging from forestry to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. A multitude of other opportunities exist in a diverse range of species, habitats and locations. As well as offering a vast range of environmental projects, we offer volunteers the opportunity to help the economically, socially and politically disadvantaged people of the region by providing a wide variety of humanitarian work. There are opportunities to get involved in child welfare, community development, education and health programmes.

The projects we offer either require the volunteer to make a small financial contribution (participation fee), are free but volunteers are responsible for covering their own living expenses, or provide complimentary accommodation and food.

Projects vary in length from one week up to a full year. Most of the projects we offer are from one month to three months; however, there are opportunities to volunteer for shorter or longer periods of time.

Because we help hundreds of grassroots organisations find people willing to help them achieve their objectives, we support environmental conservation and local community development in the region. Without the support and commitment of volunteers many of these organisations would be unable to carry out their vital work.

Cheetah Experience Ashia offers a tranquil home and sanctuary to its hand-raised ambassador cheetahs, including the retired or unique cheetahs who need extra love and attention as they could not survive in the wild.
Volunteers have the opportunity to come and join us in our conservation efforts, getting hands-on experience working with our animals on a farm, whilst spending time with people that share a love and passion for new experiences and at the same time supporting the fight of an endangered animal.
Volunteers work alongside our family of experienced and knowledgeable staff, doing the same daily work they do, thus giving volunteers an amazing opportunity to have up close and personal experiences with our animals, whilst learning on a daily basis.
The volunteer programmes give you the freedom to volunteer for as long as you like; for shorter periods or extended stays depending on your requirements. Volunteers can choose to lodge in our volunteer house or our working holiday volunteers have the option to stay in our separate units for a more relaxing stay. Breakfast and lunch is provided, and volunteers have two days off per week to explore Cape Town and the surrounding Winelands area.

OUTSET YOUTH ACTION

Description

Outset Youth Action (Outset) is an independent county wide youth organisation and registered Charity which operates over the whole county of West Sussex.

Outset acts as a volunteering agency for young people aged 13 – 25, encouraging and supporting young people to take on a wide range of volunteering opportunities within their community. The nature of these opportunities is to provide support and benefit to West Sussex communities and contribute to each young person’s own personal development.

Volunteers choose the type of activity they wish to be involved in. Their skills and interests are carefully matched to a wide range of projects in their community.

Outset Youth Action believes that every young person should be recognised for their contribution, no matter how big or small. We think it’s important to give young people the opportunity to reflect on their learning and to identify the skills they have gained through their volunteering experiences.

All Outset volunteers receive a signed certificate giving details of their personal involvement and commitment. Young People aged between 16 - 25 can work towards and receive a nationally recognised award and also complete an ASDAN short course qualification in volunteering.

Outset Youth Action encourages and supports a wide range of young people to volunteer for the benefit of their local community, irrespective of their personal situation. They do not need any qualifications and it will not cost them any money.

Central to Outset’s work is the continuous support given to the volunteers by Outset’s team of Youth Volunteer Advisers. Each district of West Sussex is represented by a Youth Volunteer Advisor who is responsible for the supervision of the volunteering activities of young people drawn from the district.

They are responsible for organising placements and for overseeing matters relating to health and safety. All placements are carefully monitored and risk assessed by Outset to ensure that they are both appropriate and safe for volunteers.

Outset Volunteers don’t need to have had previous volunteering experience – just a commitment to helping others and making a difference in their community.

people and places - responsible volunteering

people and places, an international award winning organisation, provides well-matched, rewarding, challenging and safe experiences for volunteers and local people – with their mutual informed consent.

Volunteers’ skills and experience are matched specifically to the projects’ needs – we put the right people in the right places, at the right time.

people and places is a social enterprise and is not run for the benefit of shareholders.

At least 80% of volunteers' funds are spent in the host country – and volunteers know HOW and WHERE their money is spent.

people and places matches skills and experience to need – our role is to enable both volunteers and local communities to gain mutual benefits. Crucial to this role are our relationships with our local partners.

The planning and development of projects is through our local partners, our project management teams – people who are inspired and inspiring, and who are in and of their community – they are the ongoing link with projects and volunteers, thus maintaining sustainable development and continuity in the project.

Volunteers are fully involved in the planning of their own individual placement – we match their skills to the project’s needs; we discuss the project’s proposals with the volunteers; with mutual agreement, the volunteer’s placement is confirmed.

Ninth Wave Global

Description

Ninth Wave Global is an independent, international organisation and think tank which works in unknown or forgotten territories over the horizon, generating space for investigation and positive change in environmental, community and social settings. We currently work in Europe, the Americas and Australasia, encouraging quiet, humble and slow exploration of places and people, opening up space for people to recognise shared humanity, needs and aspirations, culminating in concrete programs of local-led, grass-roots developmental projects fundamentally based on local horizons, not imported value systems or solutions.

Having worked in territories over the horizon with remote communities for many years, we fundamentally believe that all meaningful change is necessarily slow, locally-led, attitude-and-aspiration-based. Communities with appropriate resources and assistance are capable of generating the autonomous power to develop systems for themselves. As such, working with communities primarily in the Americas, Ninth Wave is intent not on generating change per se, but on identifying and empowering people who are capable of generating change for themselves and their communities.

ORANGUTAN HEALTH PROJECT

Description

Orangutan Health Project is a unique and fascinating project investigating the special behaviours and ecological conditions necessary for maintenance of health in wild orangutans. As part of a 13-day volunteer team, you will perform various tasks necessary for the project’s work at the time you are visiting. Much of this fieldwork will be carried out in the jungle, where you will have a once in a lifetime chance to experience a living, breathing rain forest in one of the most beautiful areas of the world. If that isn't enough, you will be within viewing distance of the most graceful primate on earth (physical contact is NOT allowed). The importance of our work cannot be emphasized enough - it will bring knowledge to basic science, public health, and wildlife conservation management and help save both flora and fauna. Possible research tasks in the forest include: Finding and following orangutans to collect behavioural data and/or faecal and plant samples, nest counting to provide seasonally varying estimates of the orangutan population, fruit trail transects to record the range of foodstuffs available to orangutans in an area, or locating areas with a significant wild orangutan population.

Our projects are developed by ourselves, thus providing a more real and rewarding experience of volunteer work and cultural exchange.
We are delighted to offer to all the participants a personalized and totally experiential experience of knowing our beautiful country, culture and real social situation

Wildlife SOS

Description

Wildlife SOS was established in 1995 by Kartick Satyanarayan and Geeta Seshamani with the holistic belief that providing sustainable alternative livelihoods and education to communities dependent on wildlife and natural resources, would lead to sustainable wildlife protection.

Wildlife SOS’s major project was the abolition of the barbaric practice of dancing bears in which sloth bear cubs were poached from the wild and trained using cruel methods to entertain tourists. Wildlife SOS started work on the rehabilitation of the Kalandar communities (originally Muslim gypsies with a highly nomadic lifestyle who were famous for their mastery over animals) through education and an alternative livelihood program as an extension of this dancing bear rescue project.

Our other project focuses on the plight of captive elephants in India, who are privately owned and have the cruel history of being used for begging, or are held in temples for blessings or are being forced to perform in circuses. Wildlife SOS is trying to improve the situation
for these elephants by rescuing injured and sick elephants that are forced to work in oppressive conditions as well as doing advocacy and using legislation to prevent the capture and trading of wild elephant calves and their sale and trade in private ownership as that will go a long way to resolve the abuse of privately owned elephants.
