TIME FOR GOD

Description

Quality Volunteering Changes Lives

We are a charitable organisation based in the UK and recruit dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers matching them to full-time, long-term placements. We aim to enable people to grow professionally, personally and spiritually through full-time voluntary service.

TFG currently hosts around 100 volunteers per annum within its core young adult volunteer programme, most serving in the UK.

Volunteers come to us from many different countries …

UK, South Korea, Hungary, Sweden, Denmark, Ukraine, Brazil, Mexico, Kenya, USA, Spain, Egypt, Slovakia, Poland, Uganda, Netherlands, Finland, Russia, Norway, Italy, Estonia, Israel, France, Mexico, Belgium, Germany & New Zealand.

Training and support is central to TFG’s philosophy, so each volunteer attends 2 residential conferences to meet other young adults and to hear about a range of issues relevant to their situation. The staff team keep in touch with volunteers in their placements by phone and email, and the Field Officers visit them through the year to check all is going well.

Volunteer placements include churches of most “flavours”; youth work; residential care of elderly, adults with learning difficulties and/or other special needs; activity centres and projects; debt counselling work; YMCAs; rehabilitative projects for a range of substance abuses; and so on.

We see it as our role to help each volunteer explore their faith journey, starting from where they themselves are, rather than where we would like them to be. Thus we welcome young people from all the mainstream Christian traditions, and both those with a passionate/personal faith and those with a more casual/nominal approach or no faith at all – and all points in between – with the understanding that we are all committed to exploring or journeying together.

We are therefore balancing our personal faith positions with the need to enable our volunteers to find their own paths – of which we are a part.

Brethren Volunteer Service (BVS) is people giving their time and skills to help a world in need. It is a way for people to work at issues greater than themselves, recognizing that their efforts may not immediately solve deep-rooted problems, but can be part of ongoing work for justice, peace, and the care of creation. As sponsor of the program, the Church of the Brethren exemplifies its heritage in peacemaking and service through the goals of BVS: Working for peace, advocating justice, serving human need, and care for creation. Some volunteers engage in projects that deal with immediate needs. Others work towards changing unjust systems. Sharing God's love through acts of service, volunteers bring hope to shattered lives, offer food and shelter to those in need, and build understanding between individuals, groups, nations and humanity and the world we share. BVS seeks volunteers willing to act on their commitment and values. We challenge individuals to offer themselves, their time and their talents to work which is both difficult and demanding, rewarding and joyful.

EXIS

Description

EXIS is your ticket to put together a different kind of travel experience. EXIS got started in 1982 with restlessness and an urge to ramble – before globalization was a household word and the world could be Googled in five seconds. EXIS made sure nearly 30 years ago that Danish au pairs could drink tea on the High Street in London – and now offers unique language study and voluntary work on five continents. You can probably still be an au pair, but a lot of travellers think it is just as exciting to tend elephants in Sri Lanka, help out at an orphanage in Costa Rica, work with Masai women in Tanzania, teach English to young Buddhist monks in Thailand or work on conservation in the Grand Canyon, USA. EXIS’ philosophy is still the same – to make it possible for you to satisfy your curiosity and thirst for adventure. We work with partners all over the world to build the most secure starting gate for unique experiences – and you take it from there! Forget all about the world getting smaller. It’s bigger than ever and right within your reach. Join the world... it's yours !

Latin Link works in partnership with churches to send and receive individuals, families and teams, to and from Latin American communities, to share the love of God.

We do this through three inter-related programmes:

Step: Our renowned short-term programme for teams. Get a hands on experience of mission in Latin America, living and working alongside a local church, helping with a practical project and joining them in reaching out to their community. Apply as an individual or put together your own team. Projects last for 16 weeks each spring and 3-7 weeks in the summer.

Stride: A programme offering student placements and mission training opportunities.
Student Placements: 6-9 months suitable for language students on their year abroad or 6-8 weeks suitable for medical students requiring an elective. An opportunity to explore how your study and mission can work together to support churches and Christian projects in Latin America.
Mission Training Opportunities: Bespoke placements for individuals, married couples or families to spend 12-24 months putting their faith into practice in Latin America. Use and develop your gifts and skills while working alongside a church or Christian run project. Stride could be a career change, sabbatical, or something to pursue in early retirement. A Stride placement is a great way to explore whether cross-cultural mission is for you. A 24 month Stride is the pathway into the Stay programme.

Stay: We have over 100 members of many nationalities, working with local churches and organisations to help them meet a diverse range of spiritual and practical needs - from caring for street children, to training church leaders and supporting university students to generating employment opportunities.

About Us:

Volunteer in South Africa was founded by Mandy Ann Weschta in 2007. A Boy by the name of Jason, Came running past Mandy’s House and Stole her Cell phone from her staircase whilst she was washing her car.

The neighbours next to Mandy’s house saw the little boy stealing her phone and they got in the car to go and drive after the boy. They also called the police. The police happened to be in the area and the police car and the neighbour both found the boy in an alley way near to Mandy’s house. They took the boy back to the house with Mandy’s Phone.

Mandy asked the police what they were going to do with the boy now that he had stolen her phone. The police said they were going to have to punish the boy (because he was under the age to go to jail). At that moment Mandy remembered the verse: LUKE 4:18, The spirit of The Lord is on me because he has anointed me to preach the Good news the Poor. The police were just about to drive off with the little boy Jason. Mandy ran after them and asked them to stop the car and let the boy out the police van. I told the police that I would take care of the Boy (Jason). Mandy had a one on one chat with the Boy Jason and I told him that he had made a mistake by stealing her cell phone and even although he had stolen her cell phone she forgave him and Jesus forgive him. Mandy told him it was not the right thing to do and God Gets very sad when we steal. Mandy told the boy how much God loved him and how much God wants the best for him. She also told him that when he feels alone, then God is watching him and comforting him in those times.

That day, Mandy decided to take Jason Surfing. Jason ended up being a Great surfer. He was not attending school at the time, so Mandy told him that if he went back to school then he would be able to surf every-day. Jason loved this idea and started going back to school. The following week he brought 30 of his Street friends to come and surf. This is when Mandy saw a Great Potential to change the Community.

Mandy then made a rule that if they went to school every-day then she would collect them from school (after school) and teach 3 of them to surf a day. This is when Volunteer in South Africa was Launched. At that time Mandy owned a Surf lodge in Muizenberg (called abreakaway) she then decided to change her surf lodge into a Volunteer house. (To impact the community and add HOPE into many less Privileged children’s lives).

Since then Volunteer in South Africa has grown to 7 locations (with more to come) and SUPERSPORT has sponsored the sports Groups with Sports Gear. Mandy has come along side many more Sports Projects providing them with Volunteers and finances to run their projects.

Mandy says ‘My aim was to impact the less Privileged children’s lives in South Africa and Africa at Large’ I always have had a heart to reach out to the people in need and add HOPE into their lives. It’s so good to see that God has used me to reach out to many areas in South Africa and Africa, God is using me as a tool to Impact many less Privileged People’s lives throughout Africa now.

Since I started teaching the street children Surfing in 2007 we have seen many children going back to school and becoming some-thing in this LIFE. We have also built an Orphan school in the township, waterproofed many people’s homes from the bad weather, we have partnered with many projects that need help and support and since I started Volunteer in South Africa over 2500 children and Youth and adults have come to the Lord and are attending church in their local area.

We have taught 1200 children to surf and 300 boys to play soccer and 600 children how to swim so far. We have helped many people with food by going house to house in the townships (slums): offering food to people and Counselling to them. I am so blessed to be able to reach out to the less Privileged people of Africa and South Africa and add HOPE into their lives.

Thank-you to the people that have believed in me and supported me to do God’s work. We are a faith based Organisation, so whatever God brings is what we use to keep the projects maintained and Running. If you decide to sponsor a child to go to school then the cost is +-$150 a year for their uniform and shoes and books and school fees. We will then keep you updated on the child progress. If you decide to sponsor feeding a family (that has no food) then the cost is +-$40 a month. Any donations you can make to help the less Privileged will help. When making a payment through PayPal or into our Bank account, then you can let us know how you would like us to keep in touch with you. We will then let you know what your donation has been used for. All and any donations are much appreciated by the less Privileged people.

AFRICAID – WHIZZ KIDS UNITED

Description

Vision: To create an AIDS-free generation Mission: To harness the power of football to engage and educate kids how to lead successful, HIV free lives. HIV /AIDS is the number one global health challenge, and in the absence of a cure, prevention has to be the main stay in the struggle against AIDS. Africaid has created a truly unique HIV prevention 'package called WhizzKids United (WKU). WKU has been founded on the principal that knowledge alone will not prevent HIV. Instead kids are taught life-skills that inform, motivate and influence their behaviour bringing about a positive behavioural change designed to prevent new HIV infections. By combining each life skill with football, integrating it fully into the programme, and playing on their love for the beautiful game, ensures the kids are fully engaged and has the potential to truly create an AIDS free generation. We are an official Implementing Partner of FIFA’s Football For Hope Movement and hope to capitalize on the 2010 FIFA World Cup by harnessing the passion Africa has for football to address Africa’s biggest challenge, HIV, and in doing so bring about a bright AIDS free future for the next generation of football lovers. In terms of the recruitment of volunteers, we are really only looking at this stage to recruit for our Centre of Excellence or Head Office which is based on Clarence Road in Durban. Our new offices are complete with onsite football pitch where we will train our trainers, run our life skills programme with Clarence Primary School and look to use the field to run tournaments. In terms of scope of work and what volunteers would be required to do, we need to make it clear that for the most part it is office based, although there would be some exposure to the kids on the programme, rather it was through visits to the sites we operate in or through helping at one of the many tournaments we run to celebrate their graduation through the programme. Broadly there are three teams that they may work on; depending on their skill set and also what volunteer requirements / needs we have at the time. They may in fact work across all teams. The three teams are the CEO’s team, which covers strategic vision, project expansion, fundraising, marketing and PR and Events, there is the Programme Management who are responsible for the roll out of the programme management of trainers and school liaison, and then there is Research and Evaluation, which handles both internal and external evaluation to ensure we have measurable results for our programme and also how we can look to improve the programme.

PATH TO AFRICA, "The Hostel Hoff"

Description

Path to Africa was set up in 2006 and is primarily involved in accommodating volunteers and managing projects in the local town. We are located in Moshi, Tanzania. This is a medium-sized town in the north of Tanzania located at the base of Kilimanjaro. High rates of HIV/AIDs, malaria-related deaths and unemployment have left many of the people in the area in need. There are many opportunities to volunteer in Moshi. These include teaching at small, basic nursery, primary and secondary schools at a local level, helping at orphanages, working at mobile health clinics, educating locals on the causes and preventative measures of HIV/AIDs, etc. Generally volunteers come to Moshi in one of two ways. Some come on specific placements, such as social workers or doctors to the local hospital. Others come through the large international volunteer networks such as i-to-i, CCS, etc. These companies charge huge amounts of money, very little of which, if any, ends up going towards the projects. Path to Africa is a small organisation that provides accommodation and project placement, or information on the various projects at which volunteers can donate their time and skills. We run a number of projects within the town. Volunteers are needed for many roles including teaching, project planning, construction and fundraising. Path to Africa are also involved with a local women’s' group that provides aid to women and children in rural villages and access to medical attention. This group carries out HIV and health awareness programs along with seminars to promote the rights of women and children. Along with the projects we run, we also have connections with local groups such as a women's group, a secondary school and other local orphanages (in total about 15 projects which we send volunteer to). We will help you find a placement suited to you, give you advise and provide you with accommodation, breakfast and dinner and a comfortable hostel in which to relax and meet other volunteers. This organisation was set up in order to allow volunteers to come and help without being ripped off. The hostel can accommodate up to 24 people and our volunteers come from all over the world. We charge only for the accommodation, not for volunteering at projects, as we do not believe that it is right that volunteers should pay for the opportunity to help others. Therefore, those who stay with us will spend approximately 1000+ dollars less per month than they would should they have booked through the larger profit-making organisations. We believe that any money you wish to donate should come straight from you directly to the projects and so the money the volunteer saves can be spent or donated in any way that he/she decides. To chat personally about a placement with us email us at info@hostelhoff.com or info@pathtoafrica.org and we will reply within 24 hours. For more information about our projects look up www.pathtoafrica.com or www.hostelhoff.com.

BMS WORLD MISSION

Description

BMS World Mission works in partnership with Baptist churches and other Christian organisations in approximately 30 countries across four continents - Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. As a leading Christian mission organisation, BMS World Mission aims to share life in all its fullness with the worlds people by:

1) Enabling them to know Christ.

2) Alleviating suffering and injustice.

3) Improving the quality of life, with many people as our primary agent of change - motivating, training, sending and resourcing them.

We have around 200 mission workers engaged in pastoral and church planting work, engineering, teaching, agriculture, community and medical work etc, and then we also send short-term volunteers each year. BMS Action Teams (gap year) are designed specifically for young people between the ages of 18-23 and run from September to June. The programme starts with a month of quality mission training, followed by a six-month overseas placement working alongside BMS mission staff or a local partner church. On return to the UK, teams head out on a two-month tour of Baptist churches, sharing their experiences and encouraging other people to get involved in world mission.

The BMS Volunteer Programme is specifically designed for people who want to share their professional skills and experience to demonstrate Christ's love in another culture. Spending between three months and two years overseas enables you to impact on the lives of those in need in a meaningful way. We aim to match your expertise (technical and non-technical) with the needs of BMS personnel or partner organisations, so that the placement provides help where it is really needed and is a truly fulfilling experience. You may think that your particular expertise could never be used in short-term mission, but your skill could be the very one our overseas partners are looking for. There is no typical volunteer - we have individuals and couples from all walks of life serving on the volunteer programme. Applicants need to be over 21 years for this programme and we can accept people up to their mid-seventies as long as they can obtain health clearance. We are also able to place medical electives, language students and Bible college students for their placements.
