Diakonisches Jahr Im Ausland, Evangelische Freiwilligendienste is the German branch of the European Diaconal Year network which consists of a number of national Christian-based volunteering schemes. (The British branch is Time For God.) They share common standards, and a commitment to the personal development of the volunteer through this form of work. Each offers support to the volunteers through both personal supervision and regular residential conferences or seminars. Evangelische Freilligendienste sends German volunteers to placements of the member organisations of EDYN (more information at www.dija.de and www.edyn.org) and is hosting volunteers from thies countries in Germany. Apply in your own country through our partner organisations, which you can find at www.edyn.org. Placements generally include residential care projects (children, elderly, disabled, learning difficulties, sick, etc.), rehabilitation/hostel work (drug abusers, ex-offenders, homeless, refugees, etc.), community support (visiting elderly, families affected by HIV/Aids, youth work, etc), and churches (assisting ministry teams, parish work, pastoral care, youth work, children). For countries like Germany, the UK, France, Belgium and placements overseas, volunteers should have good language knowledge. For other countries, the language requirements determine to which type of placement a vounteer is assigned. Volunteers with an offending background may be accepted on the programme.
