TIME FOR GOD

Description

Quality Volunteering Changes Lives

We are a charitable organisation based in the UK and recruit dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers matching them to full-time, long-term placements. We aim to enable people to grow professionally, personally and spiritually through full-time voluntary service.

TFG currently hosts around 100 volunteers per annum within its core young adult volunteer programme, most serving in the UK.

Volunteers come to us from many different countries …

UK, South Korea, Hungary, Sweden, Denmark, Ukraine, Brazil, Mexico, Kenya, USA, Spain, Egypt, Slovakia, Poland, Uganda, Netherlands, Finland, Russia, Norway, Italy, Estonia, Israel, France, Mexico, Belgium, Germany & New Zealand.

Training and support is central to TFG’s philosophy, so each volunteer attends 2 residential conferences to meet other young adults and to hear about a range of issues relevant to their situation. The staff team keep in touch with volunteers in their placements by phone and email, and the Field Officers visit them through the year to check all is going well.

Volunteer placements include churches of most “flavours”; youth work; residential care of elderly, adults with learning difficulties and/or other special needs; activity centres and projects; debt counselling work; YMCAs; rehabilitative projects for a range of substance abuses; and so on.

We see it as our role to help each volunteer explore their faith journey, starting from where they themselves are, rather than where we would like them to be. Thus we welcome young people from all the mainstream Christian traditions, and both those with a passionate/personal faith and those with a more casual/nominal approach or no faith at all – and all points in between – with the understanding that we are all committed to exploring or journeying together.

We are therefore balancing our personal faith positions with the need to enable our volunteers to find their own paths – of which we are a part.

ZARTONK-89 NGO

Description

Zartonk-89 (which acts in Republic of Armenia) is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) founded in 1989 and registered as an NGO with the Ministry of Justice in 1995. Since its foundation, the NGO has been actively engaged in the promotion of health, education, environment and social assistance for needy segments of rural and urban populations in Armenia. The active support creativity of our partners and local volunteers has made it possible to extend its presence to other regions of Armenia. There are branches of our NGO in three regions of our country. Our mission is to improve the lives of parentless, needy and refugee children and youth in Armenia. We implement various educational, social and health projects focused on improving the mental, physical and social skills of youth and on building their self esteem. In addition we have implemented several development projects that benefit entire communities. Our projects range from summer camps and basic education programmes for parentless and needy children to basic hygenic education for elementary school children and first aid training for rural villagers. In addition, we have installed flour mills in agricultural regions to create work places by the aim of self-funding. From an organisational viewpoint, our NGO has a collegial management. The NGO board is directly responsible for electing the NGO President, Vice President and Secretary respectively. The operational work lies with the NGO staff, which comprises some permanent staff and volunteer members. Our modest resources have allowed us to establish and maintain partnerships with other partner organisations abroad whose support for our NGO activities has been active and consistent. The support, for instance, of the Catholic Committee against Hunger and Development in France is worth mentioning. Zartonk-89 actively monitors the issues it has undertaken as part of its vision. This monitoring allows the organisation to conduct brainstorming sessions for the identification and generation of new project proposals. We are unable to place volunteers with an offending background.

BRETHREN VOLUNTEER SERVICE

Description

Brethren Volunteer Service (BVS) is people giving their time and skills to help a world in need. It is a way for people to work at issues greater than themselves, recognizing that their efforts may not immediately solve deep-rooted problems, but can be part of ongoing work for justice, peace, and the care of creation. As sponsor of the program, the Church of the Brethren exemplifies its heritage in peacemaking and service through the goals of BVS: Working for peace, advocating justice, serving human need, and care for creation. Some volunteers engage in projects that deal with immediate needs. Others work towards changing unjust systems. Sharing God's love through acts of service, volunteers bring hope to shattered lives, offer food and shelter to those in need, and build understanding between individuals, groups, nations and humanity and the world we share. BVS seeks volunteers willing to act on their commitment and values. We challenge individuals to offer themselves, their time and their talents to work which is both difficult and demanding, rewarding and joyful.

INTER-CULTURAL YOUTH EXCHANGE

Description

ICYEUK is an ethical volunteering charity which believes in a world where the sharing of cultures and ideas is embraced, celebrated and lived.
We work in partnership with an international network of locally managed ICYE organisations and partners to provide supported international volunteer opportunities that directly benefit local communities and encourage young people from around the world to live, learn and work together.

Volunteers support local projects throughout Africa, Latin America, Europe and Asia for anything between 3 weeks and 12 months. Projects include promoting human & women’s rights, supporting those with disabilities or affected by HIV and AIDS, education projects, environmental conservation, rehabilitating street children, community development programmes and much more.

As a cultural programme, ICYE UK volunteers receive extensive training both before departure and on-arrival, and support & training throughout their stay. We invest in volunteer’s personal development, such as providing CV advice at our returned volunteer camps and we actively engage volunteers in the on-going development of the organisation.
ICYE UK also helps extensively with fundraising towards raising the programme fee. As a charity, we have an all-inclusve programme fee (ie. return flights, accommodation, food, transport costs, visa costs etc) and our support means our volunteers are well equipped to be able to raise funds.

Recruitment is ongoing throughout the year and we have regular information days, held at our office in Kilburn, London, where interested parties are invited to find out more about our ethical charity and meet returned volunteers. For details of specific upcoming information days and countries/ projects, please visit our website www.icye.org.uk.

BMS WORLD MISSION

Description

BMS World Mission works in partnership with Baptist churches and other Christian organisations in approximately 30 countries across four continents - Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. As a leading Christian mission organisation, BMS World Mission aims to share life in all its fullness with the worlds people by:

1) Enabling them to know Christ.

2) Alleviating suffering and injustice.

3) Improving the quality of life, with many people as our primary agent of change - motivating, training, sending and resourcing them.

We have around 200 mission workers engaged in pastoral and church planting work, engineering, teaching, agriculture, community and medical work etc, and then we also send short-term volunteers each year. BMS Action Teams (gap year) are designed specifically for young people between the ages of 18-23 and run from September to June. The programme starts with a month of quality mission training, followed by a six-month overseas placement working alongside BMS mission staff or a local partner church. On return to the UK, teams head out on a two-month tour of Baptist churches, sharing their experiences and encouraging other people to get involved in world mission.

The BMS Volunteer Programme is specifically designed for people who want to share their professional skills and experience to demonstrate Christ's love in another culture. Spending between three months and two years overseas enables you to impact on the lives of those in need in a meaningful way. We aim to match your expertise (technical and non-technical) with the needs of BMS personnel or partner organisations, so that the placement provides help where it is really needed and is a truly fulfilling experience. You may think that your particular expertise could never be used in short-term mission, but your skill could be the very one our overseas partners are looking for. There is no typical volunteer - we have individuals and couples from all walks of life serving on the volunteer programme. Applicants need to be over 21 years for this programme and we can accept people up to their mid-seventies as long as they can obtain health clearance. We are also able to place medical electives, language students and Bible college students for their placements.

Soutpansberg Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation (SCBC)

Description

The Soutpaspansberg Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation was established in 2014 in order to catalogue the biodiversity of understudied animals in the Soutpansberg region of South Africa. The project initially began with a strong herpetological emphasis; soon it became apparent that it would be impossible to limit the study to a single group. Soon amphibians, small mammals, scorpions, Theraphosidae, Odonata and Lepidoptera were added to the focus of the study. The inclusion of the additional groups has not hampered the reptilian data collection as these groups are often encountered while searching for reptiles. We aim to provide an experience that will bring people into close contact with nature – uncoupled from the everyday routines of urban-based consumer culture – and to facilitate new ways of relating to the world.

We require research assistant volunteers to help us with our ongoing project:
Currently we are looking for people interested in herpetology, entomology, arachnids and small mammals. Participants need to be comfortable around reptiles, reasonably fit and happy to live without electricity (we do have solar power) and in a remote area. Data is collected through fieldwork as well as accessing existing databases and private collections/lists. Where possible fieldwork will be conducted in understudied regions to the East and north of the Soutpansberg range. The collected information will indicate biodiversity hotspots and highlight areas for the consideration of conservational action.

The information generated from this project will include species lists, distribution within the region, habitat preferences and also biological notes of observed behaviours. One of the intended outcomes of the project and the collected information is the consolidation of the information into a publication for future research reference as well as for the education of the interested public.

Research assistants who wish to partake in their own research may do so after discussing their options and drafting a proposal with our help. We are also able to take on students who need to do an internship as part of their course if we our informed upon booking.

The SCBC aims to provide an experience that will bring people into close contact with nature – uncoupled from the everyday routines of urban-based consumer culture – and to facilitate new ways of relating to the world.

Skills and Knowledge you will acquire through participation:
• Reptile and Amphibian Identification and Data Collection for Conservation
• Setting up and maintaining Pit Fall and Funnel Traps for small vertebrates and invertebrates
• Arthropod Identification and Data Collection for Conservation
• Horticulture for Conservation
• Basic Tracking
• Bird Identification and Bird Conservation Data Collection
• Basic Ecology and Conservation in a Changing World
• Macro Photography
• Living off the Grid.

VOLUNTEER ACTION FOR PEACE

Description

Volunteer Action for Peace (VAP) provide affordable volunteer opportunities worldwide from 2 weeks to 12 months, throughout the world. VAP was founded in the 1960s and exchanges an average of 150 volunteers annually with dozens of international partner organisations worldwide.

Workcamps (2-4 weeks) typically bring together a temporary community of 8-30 international volunteers from different backgrounds to provide services to local community projects. The volunteers carry out unskilled tasks that would not otherwise be possible. The practical work is only part of the main objective. The work is a tool and method to promote intercultural understanding and friendship between the volunteers and with the local community.

VAP’s Medium/Long Term Volunteering (M/LTV) Programme gives you the chance to volunteer abroad from 1 to 12 months, working in a project organised by one of the many grassroots organisations that VAP co-operates with around the world. M/LTV is not only about work, but it is also a unique experience of combining living abroad with learning a new culture and getting to know the local people, while being deeply involved with a project and its aims.
