VOLUNTEER IN CAMBODIA

Description

Volunteer in Cambodia recruits volunteers to teach at Conversations with Foreigners (CWF), a local conversational English-language centre in Phnom Penh, forming a unique model of learning and cultural exchange to raise money for the Cambodian Rural Development Team (CRDT), a local non-government organisation (LNGO) working to improve livelihoods with rural communities. Vision: A self-sufficient CRDT working to improve livelihoods with rural communities in Cambodia. Mission: To provide conversational English-language courses and support quality volunteer experiences while raising money for CRDT's work. The difference: In many volunteer programmes, you are working directly with the poorest people. When volunteering with us at CWF, you are not. Your students can at least afford money to study more fortunate than many. Instead, you are contributing to the long-term sustainability of CRDT - Cambodian experts experienced in rural development - to work to improve livelihoods with rural communities. Rural communities make up 80% of Cambodia’s population. We believe this model of volunteer programme is more sustainable for rural communities and Cambodia. CRDT formed in 2001 to undertake development projects which improve the living standards of subsistence communities in rural Cambodia. All CRDT members are university educated, yet all are from rural backgrounds and therefore share a unique understanding of the hardship and poverty which face many remote communities in Cambodia. The team spend the majority of their time living and working in the villages directly with beneficiaries.

people and places - responsible volunteering

Description

people and places, an international award winning organisation, provides well-matched, rewarding, challenging and safe experiences for volunteers and local people – with their mutual informed consent.

Volunteers’ skills and experience are matched specifically to the projects’ needs – we put the right people in the right places, at the right time.

people and places is a social enterprise and is not run for the benefit of shareholders.

At least 80% of volunteers' funds are spent in the host country – and volunteers know HOW and WHERE their money is spent.

people and places matches skills and experience to need – our role is to enable both volunteers and local communities to gain mutual benefits. Crucial to this role are our relationships with our local partners.

The planning and development of projects is through our local partners, our project management teams – people who are inspired and inspiring, and who are in and of their community – they are the ongoing link with projects and volunteers, thus maintaining sustainable development and continuity in the project.

Volunteers are fully involved in the planning of their own individual placement – we match their skills to the project’s needs; we discuss the project’s proposals with the volunteers; with mutual agreement, the volunteer’s placement is confirmed.

EXIS

Description

EXIS is your ticket to put together a different kind of travel experience. EXIS got started in 1982 with restlessness and an urge to ramble – before globalization was a household word and the world could be Googled in five seconds. EXIS made sure nearly 30 years ago that Danish au pairs could drink tea on the High Street in London – and now offers unique language study and voluntary work on five continents. You can probably still be an au pair, but a lot of travellers think it is just as exciting to tend elephants in Sri Lanka, help out at an orphanage in Costa Rica, work with Masai women in Tanzania, teach English to young Buddhist monks in Thailand or work on conservation in the Grand Canyon, USA. EXIS’ philosophy is still the same – to make it possible for you to satisfy your curiosity and thirst for adventure. We work with partners all over the world to build the most secure starting gate for unique experiences – and you take it from there! Forget all about the world getting smaller. It’s bigger than ever and right within your reach. Join the world... it's yours !

Angkor Tree School

Description

Angkor Tree School, a free school where children of the poorest families in one of the outskirts of Siem Reap, minutes away from stunning Unesco World Heritage Angkor Wat, enjoy English and Japanese classes, as a complement of the local school system. Knowledge of English is a first step out of poverty for families that often survive on an income of less than 1 us$ per day.
At Angkor Tree School children not only get language classes, but the ones that did not have breakfast at home get a meal, there is fresh drinkable water, children can play and enjoy, and that is what kids should do. Angkor Tree School keeps the children away from working in the field, from selling souvenirs to tourists, from collecting empty cans to complement the family income ...
Classes are from Monday to Friday from 08.00 to 10.00 and from 14.00 to 16.00, leaving volunteer teachers plenty of time to explore the city and region.
We expect a good knowledge of English. Those without teaching experience will assist a local teacher ; playing games with the kids, working in smaller groups ... Those with more experience can take a more advanced class where we mainly focus on conversation skills.
It's a volunteer job, so we offer no salary, but of course you don't need to pay anything.
We offer accommodation (room with shower and toilet), WiFi, bike, and 2 meals (breakfast and dinner) for 9 us$ per day, but the volunteer is free to choose any accommodation in town.
Read the stories of some volunteers on the blog page of our website!

AMAIDI International

Description

Since 2006 AMAIDI enables social organizations worldwide to get access to professional and general volunteer resources to be able to meet their global challenges.

Therefore we inspire and mobilize individuals, companies and universities to engage themselves locally or online, either with their skills (pro bono) or their work force (hands-on).

Amaidi International links overseas and local volunteers with local communities they want to support via building capacity of the local organizations that serve these communities such as non-governmental organizations, schools, hospitals, care-homes and social enterprises.

Amaidi International also partners with responsible travel organizations in the countries we work in, so that tourists are offered a different way of getting in touch with the soul of a country. This also allows opportunities to the local communities visited, such as earning respect for their culture and income towards their livelihood.

Amaidi International acknowledges that money, spent in the right way according to the real needs of a local community, can be a boon for the urban and rural poor, enabling them to place the first steps on the road to a better life, away from poverty and its ugly faces such as chronical illness, un-employment, lack of access to quality education and political empowerment.

BOSCO VOLUNTEER ACTION (BOVA)

Description

Bosco Volunteer Action (BOVA) is the UK volunteering organisation of the Salesians of Don Bosco, a Catholic Religious order. In addition it supports and encourages methods of raising awareness of development issues. This includes short term group experiences of the developing world for groups from schools and sixth forms, working with other groups who have had an ‘experience of poverty’ and instances of development education (justice and peace) within youth ministry. In all aspects of BOVA’s work there is a particular focus on providing a well-planned educational experience; stimulating, preparing and encouraging a continued involvement with development issues, faith in action and the Salesian family. We may be able to place volunteers with an offending background depending on the offence. If CRB acceptable for working with vulnerable young people for instance.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Description

Over 2 billion people worldwide live in unsafe, unhealthy poverty housing. Such living conditions rob families of the ability to earn an income or educate their children, to the extent that they are trapped in poverty, vulnerable and dependent, for generation after generation. Habitat for Humanity aims to break the cycle of poverty through enabling people to have a safe, decent place to live. We work with communities in over 90 countries, helping them to tackle housing poverty in their neighbourhoods in the ways most appropriate to them. We do this through developing their capacities and capabilities, so that they are active participants in the process rather than passive recipients of aid. Since 1976, we have helped more than 2 million people.

Soutpansberg Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation (SCBC)

Description

The Soutpaspansberg Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation was established in 2014 in order to catalogue the biodiversity of understudied animals in the Soutpansberg region of South Africa. The project initially began with a strong herpetological emphasis; soon it became apparent that it would be impossible to limit the study to a single group. Soon amphibians, small mammals, scorpions, Theraphosidae, Odonata and Lepidoptera were added to the focus of the study. The inclusion of the additional groups has not hampered the reptilian data collection as these groups are often encountered while searching for reptiles. We aim to provide an experience that will bring people into close contact with nature – uncoupled from the everyday routines of urban-based consumer culture – and to facilitate new ways of relating to the world.

We require research assistant volunteers to help us with our ongoing project:
Currently we are looking for people interested in herpetology, entomology, arachnids and small mammals. Participants need to be comfortable around reptiles, reasonably fit and happy to live without electricity (we do have solar power) and in a remote area. Data is collected through fieldwork as well as accessing existing databases and private collections/lists. Where possible fieldwork will be conducted in understudied regions to the East and north of the Soutpansberg range. The collected information will indicate biodiversity hotspots and highlight areas for the consideration of conservational action.

The information generated from this project will include species lists, distribution within the region, habitat preferences and also biological notes of observed behaviours. One of the intended outcomes of the project and the collected information is the consolidation of the information into a publication for future research reference as well as for the education of the interested public.

Research assistants who wish to partake in their own research may do so after discussing their options and drafting a proposal with our help. We are also able to take on students who need to do an internship as part of their course if we our informed upon booking.

The SCBC aims to provide an experience that will bring people into close contact with nature – uncoupled from the everyday routines of urban-based consumer culture – and to facilitate new ways of relating to the world.

Skills and Knowledge you will acquire through participation:
• Reptile and Amphibian Identification and Data Collection for Conservation
• Setting up and maintaining Pit Fall and Funnel Traps for small vertebrates and invertebrates
• Arthropod Identification and Data Collection for Conservation
• Horticulture for Conservation
• Basic Tracking
• Bird Identification and Bird Conservation Data Collection
• Basic Ecology and Conservation in a Changing World
• Macro Photography
• Living off the Grid.

GLOBAL ROUTES

Description

A rich blend of community service, adventure travel, cross-cultural exchange and language immersion sets Global Routes apart as a pioneer in the world of value-driven, experiential-based, international programming. We believe that an authentic, fun and impactful program abroad is one that is directed by service, deepened through immersion, broadened by adventure and contextualized by highly trained and caring staff. Through this unparalleled combination, our participants gain profound perspectives of another country, a culture, the world and themselves. Global Routes is first and foremost an educational institution. We are a professional team of educators, administrators, travellers and ambassadors deeply committed to facilitating safe, meaningful and gratifying international volunteer and travel experiences. We have been offering summer high school programs, semester programs for gap year and college students, and customized school programs and independent placements for nearly 25 years. Since 1986 over 10,000 volunteers have partnered with Global Routes across Bali, Belize, Bolivia, Cambodia, China, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Ghana, Guadeloupe, India, Kenya, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, St. Lucia, Tanzania, Thailand, Tibet, the United States, Vietnam and Zimbabwe. All programs and placements follow a similar experiential model. Current and detailed destinations, itineraries, dates and fees for all programs can be found on our website. In-Country Orientation: Each program begins in the international destination. There, excursions, workshops and discussions led by program staff and local experts guide participants’ firsthand exposure to the culture, language, traditions and environment of the host country. The simultaneous development of friendships within the group contributes to this powerful foundation in preparation for the true immersion ahead. Community Service & Homestay: An authentic immersion experience is the hallmark and highlight of all Global Routes programs. Our unique approach focuses the majority of a program’s time and focus within one rural community, and on one primary service project that has been selected by that community. Living in homestays, students work on their service projects and step into the rhythm of daily life alongside their local hosts. Final Travel Adventure: Places of world-renowned beauty and adventure create the backdrop for every group’s final days of reflection and celebration. Global Routes works closely with professional guides and outfitters to craft activities such as kayaking, snorkelling, white water rafting, going on safari, learning traditional arts and music, and visiting local festivals, ancient cities and geologic wonders.
