Many thanks for your interest in our work. We have many exciting projects you can join but first some info:
AVIF is an innovative online charity, with a promise to Invest in our Volunteers. We assist with sustainable development via online & onsite volunteering in mainly rural Kenya, East Africa. We do, also have projects in the Brazilian Amazon and Tibet.
Being virtual means negligible administration costs for worldwide impact. We believe in efficiency, honesty and transparency. AVIF doesn’t charge fees. If you're adventurous, have moral values, a desire to help those in need, patience, an open mind, imagination and creativity, understanding and tolerance, 18+, any race, sex, and creed .. then Welcome!
You should have some previous relevant experience of ;
Independent travel or living/working overseas
Residential voluntary work or community/ voluntary work.
If you have the commitment to travel to our projects, we’ll take care of you & provide access to our extensive network of people and organisations collaborating around the globe. We encourage you to do further internet research to ensure you are fully informed. Onsite volunteers are fully immersed into rural communities. If you’re looking for a tourist’s view of the country then this is not for you. You may need to wash your hair in a river or cook over open fires. Electricity is a luxury in most of our projects! You will be living traditionally, in no less comfort than your hosts who wake at 4/5am to light fires to boil water. Your hosts and the local children will surround you with enthusiasm and an eagerness to learn. You can repay their hospitality by advocating sustainable development NOT handouts. Help us share a range of simple but effective concepts such as solar cooking & power, disease prevention, empowerment to women, green technologies, global opportunity and internet capabilities.
Online volunteers can offer any skills they may have to help a project from the comfort of their desk, using the NABUUR "virtual village" system. No costs, no footprint. NABUUR is an entirely online system allowing anyone, anywhere to simply log on to contribute to the project. Micro-volunteering, “helping from home” is also possible via SPARKED.com.
At the end of each program we can organise optional activities e.g group safaris, climbing Mt Kenya or Kilimanjaro with our wonderful guide, Mary Kariuki. Alternatively for a little R&R we suggest you go to stay at Stilts Backpackers on Diani Beach, Kenya on the Indian Ocean coast (contact EARLY to avoid disappointment), or in wooden shacks on Ajurateua’s incredible Brazilian Atlantic coast - on the edge of the rainforest.
Please visit the website www.avif.org.uk for full details of our work and the group Summer Programme.
For further details of our work with communities in the Amazon and in rural Tibet, please click the links to the FaceBook Pages. AVIF can arrange placements at any time of year for you. There is extensive information on the website and FaceBook pages but should you have any remaining questions please do not hesitate to contact us or join us on Facebook to meet and chat with many of the volunteers who've already experienced the work we do. Please look over the websites of our associated hosts on the About Us section, and the photographs on Facebook or Flickr for an exact idea of what's involved.
Should you be interested in participating, please be aware that although AVIF does not charge any fees whatsoever, you are responsible for all other costs; international airfare, room & board, inland flights or other modes of transport, visas, health insurance, medical insurance, vaccinations. Costs as detailed on the website, for Kenya - you should book your arrival accommodation online, we recommend the Wildebeest Camp on Kibera Road [click to email] in Nairobi but will assist you with arrivals in other countries. Most of our hosts can accommodate you for free but there will be small charges for meals since cooking a meal can take hours over open fires and your hosts will normally cater for you. We will assist you with specifics.
Please send a full CV and photograph for application.
