WORLD AT PLAY

Introduction

World at Play's fourth expedition will travel to Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo and Bulgaria in Autumn 2012 to deliver high-quality sport and play sesssions for disadvantaged children and disabled adults. Working in partnership with local organisations, we aim to make a lasting impact in the communities we work with.

For volunteers, this is an amazing opportunity to get hands-on sports for development experience, develop leadership skills and go beyond the tourist trails to experience the countries in a unique way.

Expedition will happen from 23rd September til 24th Novemer 2012 (including training)



Project description:

• Planning and delivering high quality and exciting sessions for the children and adults we work with¬• Building positive relationships with our partner organizations in sessions, ‘train the trainer’ workshops and more informally¬• Supporting the Expedition Leader with tasks and responsibilities as they arise¬• Helping with expedition housekeeping e.g. cleaning the bus, sorting equipment etc.¬• Keeping the driver company sometimes on those long rides!¬• Having fun!!

BMS WORLD MISSION

Description

BMS World Mission works in partnership with Baptist churches and other Christian organisations in approximately 30 countries across four continents - Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. As a leading Christian mission organisation, BMS World Mission aims to share life in all its fullness with the worlds people by:

1) Enabling them to know Christ.

2) Alleviating suffering and injustice.

3) Improving the quality of life, with many people as our primary agent of change - motivating, training, sending and resourcing them.

We have around 200 mission workers engaged in pastoral and church planting work, engineering, teaching, agriculture, community and medical work etc, and then we also send short-term volunteers each year. BMS Action Teams (gap year) are designed specifically for young people between the ages of 18-23 and run from September to June. The programme starts with a month of quality mission training, followed by a six-month overseas placement working alongside BMS mission staff or a local partner church. On return to the UK, teams head out on a two-month tour of Baptist churches, sharing their experiences and encouraging other people to get involved in world mission.

The BMS Volunteer Programme is specifically designed for people who want to share their professional skills and experience to demonstrate Christ's love in another culture. Spending between three months and two years overseas enables you to impact on the lives of those in need in a meaningful way. We aim to match your expertise (technical and non-technical) with the needs of BMS personnel or partner organisations, so that the placement provides help where it is really needed and is a truly fulfilling experience. You may think that your particular expertise could never be used in short-term mission, but your skill could be the very one our overseas partners are looking for. There is no typical volunteer - we have individuals and couples from all walks of life serving on the volunteer programme. Applicants need to be over 21 years for this programme and we can accept people up to their mid-seventies as long as they can obtain health clearance. We are also able to place medical electives, language students and Bible college students for their placements.

Soutpansberg Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation (SCBC)

Description

The Soutpaspansberg Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation was established in 2014 in order to catalogue the biodiversity of understudied animals in the Soutpansberg region of South Africa. The project initially began with a strong herpetological emphasis; soon it became apparent that it would be impossible to limit the study to a single group. Soon amphibians, small mammals, scorpions, Theraphosidae, Odonata and Lepidoptera were added to the focus of the study. The inclusion of the additional groups has not hampered the reptilian data collection as these groups are often encountered while searching for reptiles. We aim to provide an experience that will bring people into close contact with nature – uncoupled from the everyday routines of urban-based consumer culture – and to facilitate new ways of relating to the world.

We require research assistant volunteers to help us with our ongoing project:
Currently we are looking for people interested in herpetology, entomology, arachnids and small mammals. Participants need to be comfortable around reptiles, reasonably fit and happy to live without electricity (we do have solar power) and in a remote area. Data is collected through fieldwork as well as accessing existing databases and private collections/lists. Where possible fieldwork will be conducted in understudied regions to the East and north of the Soutpansberg range. The collected information will indicate biodiversity hotspots and highlight areas for the consideration of conservational action.

The information generated from this project will include species lists, distribution within the region, habitat preferences and also biological notes of observed behaviours. One of the intended outcomes of the project and the collected information is the consolidation of the information into a publication for future research reference as well as for the education of the interested public.

Research assistants who wish to partake in their own research may do so after discussing their options and drafting a proposal with our help. We are also able to take on students who need to do an internship as part of their course if we our informed upon booking.

The SCBC aims to provide an experience that will bring people into close contact with nature – uncoupled from the everyday routines of urban-based consumer culture – and to facilitate new ways of relating to the world.

VOLUNTEER ACTION FOR PEACE

Description

Volunteer Action for Peace (VAP) provide affordable volunteer opportunities worldwide from 2 weeks to 12 months, throughout the world. VAP was founded in the 1960s and exchanges an average of 150 volunteers annually with dozens of international partner organisations worldwide.

Workcamps (2-4 weeks) typically bring together a temporary community of 8-30 international volunteers from different backgrounds to provide services to local community projects. The volunteers carry out unskilled tasks that would not otherwise be possible. The practical work is only part of the main objective. The work is a tool and method to promote intercultural understanding and friendship between the volunteers and with the local community.

VAP’s Medium/Long Term Volunteering (M/LTV) Programme gives you the chance to volunteer abroad from 1 to 12 months, working in a project organised by one of the many grassroots organisations that VAP co-operates with around the world. M/LTV is not only about work, but it is also a unique experience of combining living abroad with learning a new culture and getting to know the local people, while being deeply involved with a project and its aims.

COMMUNITY CARE DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION

Description

Community Care Development Foundattion (CCDF) is a non-governmental organization set up in 1997. It uses both local and foreign sponsors to fund its social care initiatives in the Mathare and Huruma slums of Nairobi, and Rakwaro Village in kisumu in the rural areas, where unemployment and poverty levels are both extremely high. It is connected with several local schools, runs Entrepreneurship Education and Vocational Training Programs for the mentally challenged children , conducts HIV/AIDS awareness and counseling programs ,is engaged in Environmental Projects ,pre-schoo,lfish farming on fishponds and peace building initiatives CCDF is officially registered under the Kenyan Ministry of Culture and Social Services as a Foundation to be a lead organization to promote challenges experienced in our village.we work with Rotary international to some of our goals are achieved.



CCDO is involved with the following projects in the Mathare and Huruma communities:



• Subjects teaching in primary and secondary schools

• Counselling and HIV/AIDS activities in local clinics

• Environmental initiatives with youth groups and peace

• Entrepreneurship Programmes for the unemployed

• Vocational training for the unemployed and mentally challenged persons

OPERATION MOBILISATION - SHORT TERM OPPORTUNITIES

Description

Operation Mobilisation (OM) is an interdenominational, evangelical Christian missionary organisation with work in over 110 countrie and sent by more than 100 nations. Short-term opportunities are usually with multinational teams that involve some kind of evangelistic work, sometimes combined with social or practical work. There are more short term events in the summer, but there are all-year opportunities too. VIRTUAL VOLUNTEERING: IT projects, mainly programming.

ABRUZZO LAZIO AND MOLISE NATIONAL PARK

Description

The Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, began its recovery in 1970 and has always considered volunteers as being an important. Each year hundreds of young people, students, environmentalists, researchers and teachers cooperate by freely offering their time to help the many activities the Park’s volunteers promote. Tasks can include collecting rubbish, helping the public in the Visiters Centres, marking the pathways, controlling the Park lands, creating awareness among visitors, mountain rescue, cultural activities and maintaining simple open-air structures. Volunteers take part individually, in small groups and in organized committees. Park volunteers grow in number each year and have also become more specialised and devoted to the actions which they carry out. The youngest take part in groups within the Nature Camps; the others, organised in special patrols, take part in the programme "Volunteers for Nature" which makes up watch-dogs in the more fragile and strategic areas of the Park, maintaining a surveillance over the Park lands and helping educate and raise awareness about the problems the Park faces. Without the volunteers, life in the Park would be less funny and poorer. Nature Volunteers: This initiative is promoted by the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park to offer young people who deeply care about the environment, a unique opportunity to work and live in contact with Nature. They spend a period up to 7, 14 or 21 days together with other motivated and involved people in an outpost of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise Park , working with Park operators, researchers, technicians and rangers in their various activities of prevention, control, education, assistance, maintenance and research. To participate, volunteers must be over 18 years old, have had some previous work experience in a natural environment and be able to live comfortably for a period in a mountain area, quietly and self- sufficiently in conditions that are sometimes difficult. This volunteer programme is provided by a group of 2-3 people equipped with radio telephones, a badge from the National Park and basic equipment that allows them to carry out their activities. This experience can be done throughout the year according to a calendar the Park holds. The Park provides lodging and contributes to the cost of food (€ 7,00/day), Volunteers follow the directions given by the Park personnel. The most interesting roles are: patrol activities by telemetric methods, fauna and flora surveys, keep in radio contact with the Park rangers, assistance to the public, follow scientific work, research, photographic reporting, special activities with very young visitors. All these activities are carried out with the help and the supervision of the Park personnel. VIRTUAL VOLUNTEERING: Translation of documents and promoting volunteer programmes. We may be able to accept volunteers with an offending background depending on the offence.
