AFRICAN IMPACT

Description

As GoAbroad's Top Rated Volunteer Abroad Organization in 2016, African Impact is now a multi-award winning volunteer travel organization that is operating responsible and sustainable volunteer projects and internship programs throughout Southern and East Africa. We have over 16 years’ experience and have facilitated over 12,000 volunteers in 12 countries across the continent!

OUR VISION:

To maximise the positive force of volunteering and make sure our volunteers have a fun and rewarding adventure with us. We truly believe that volunteering has the power to change lives; we’ve seen it first-hand.
We aiming to integrate ourselves into the community from grassroots to partnerships with local governments and strive to nurture a culture of mutual respect.

Our volunteer experiences are based on three key things:

- We want our volunteers to have an amazing time experiencing everything Africa has to offer and leave knowing they’ve contributed to something bigger than themselves.

- We want our volunteers to learn as much as they can about local history, culture and wildlife

- We want to support local communities and conservation efforts through education and hands-on help.

Our Charity: The Happy Africa Foundation

As part of our commitment to making a positive impact, we set up The Happy Africa Foundation in 2008. The charity helps to independently monitor our projects and provides tools and expertise that help to ensure our sustainability. The charity also ensures that donations given by our volunteers are managed responsibly.

Our Wildlife Trust: ALERT

African Impact were also instrumental in the establishment of the African Lion and Environmental Research Trust (ALERT) in 2005, a non-profit organization dedicated to the facilitation and promotion of sound conservation and management plans for the African lion in consultation with governments, wildlife authorities and communities.

Alongside African Impact, ALERT also aims to support the ground-breaking four-stage African Lion Rehabilitation and Release into the Wild Program developed by our founders in 1999.

Our Projects

To ensure the sustainability of our projects, we thoroughly evaluate each potential project with a detailed scorecard before setting up a volunteering program. This involves analysing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of a project as well as its long-term viability and impact. Also, every single one of our projects has community stakeholders. We won’t run a project unless the community not only wants us there, but actually has ownership of the project. Community buy-in is essential.

We have a core emphasis on learning and empowerment for all involved – changing the lives of people in the communities we impact, our volunteers and all African Impact staff.

BMS WORLD MISSION

Description

BMS World Mission works in partnership with Baptist churches and other Christian organisations in approximately 30 countries across four continents - Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. As a leading Christian mission organisation, BMS World Mission aims to share life in all its fullness with the worlds people by:

1) Enabling them to know Christ.

2) Alleviating suffering and injustice.

3) Improving the quality of life, with many people as our primary agent of change - motivating, training, sending and resourcing them.

We have around 200 mission workers engaged in pastoral and church planting work, engineering, teaching, agriculture, community and medical work etc, and then we also send short-term volunteers each year. BMS Action Teams (gap year) are designed specifically for young people between the ages of 18-23 and run from September to June. The programme starts with a month of quality mission training, followed by a six-month overseas placement working alongside BMS mission staff or a local partner church. On return to the UK, teams head out on a two-month tour of Baptist churches, sharing their experiences and encouraging other people to get involved in world mission.

The BMS Volunteer Programme is specifically designed for people who want to share their professional skills and experience to demonstrate Christ's love in another culture. Spending between three months and two years overseas enables you to impact on the lives of those in need in a meaningful way. We aim to match your expertise (technical and non-technical) with the needs of BMS personnel or partner organisations, so that the placement provides help where it is really needed and is a truly fulfilling experience. You may think that your particular expertise could never be used in short-term mission, but your skill could be the very one our overseas partners are looking for. There is no typical volunteer - we have individuals and couples from all walks of life serving on the volunteer programme. Applicants need to be over 21 years for this programme and we can accept people up to their mid-seventies as long as they can obtain health clearance. We are also able to place medical electives, language students and Bible college students for their placements.

EDGE OF AFRICA

Description

EDGE of AFRICA is combining a visit to breath-taking countries in Africa with a life-changing volunteer experience.

Our vast variety of wildlife, environmental, sports, medical and community projects ensures exposure to the colourful heritage, cultures and traditions these countries have to offer, with the valuable benefit of making an actual, tangible difference in the lives we touch.

Our organisation operates without any official funding. We rely solely on the goodwill, dedication and enthusiasm of our team members and volunteers. As winner of multiple awards, we accommodate all ages and nationalities, and guarantee an authentic, African experience in a safe and beautiful environment.

EDGE of AFRICA’s Ethos and Principles aim to encourage empowerment by promoting self-worth & education through responsible volunteering. We choose our projects very carefully. We aim to work at a grassroots level, meaning we work alongside locals, hearing what their needs and dreams are. We aim to empower individuals and to create a self-sustaining community. This is an instrumental factor in which projects we decide to run. EDGE of AFRICA hopes to inspire and educate individuals who otherwise don’t have the opportunities, creating a mentality of ‘I can do it!’

Why support EDGE of AFRICA?

We don't just go rushing ahead and creating part-time volunteer opportunities to please our voluntary workers. We don't go around looking for kids with runny noses, crèches in need of assistance, alien plants to be eradicated and HIV patients requiring a bit of sympathy just to act the part. We don't get our volunteers involved in services that offer them a sense of goodwill while they're over here, but then slowly dissolve as soon as they leave back home. Our projects are all sustainable and continue long after volunteers' footsteps have been washed off our beaches.

We accommodate all age, race and religious groups.

You can join us as a single volunteer or intern, or come over as part of a school or university group. We can recommend the most rewarding program for the more mature volunteers, and adapt our programs to suit your requirements.

The accommodation is very comfortable, the meals are heart-warming and the staff members will become your best friends.

Our headquarters are based in Knysna, in the jewel of the Garden Route and one of the top holiday destinations globally.

We have well established opportunities in Madagascar, Zimbabwe and Cameroon.

Our overall volunteer feedback is extremely positive and we boast a high return rate of volunteers.

For more information about our individual programmes please visit our website: www.edgeofafrica.com or email info@edgeofafrica.com to request a brochure

Description

Volunteer Action for Peace (VAP) provide affordable volunteer opportunities worldwide from 2 weeks to 12 months, throughout the world. VAP was founded in the 1960s and exchanges an average of 150 volunteers annually with dozens of international partner organisations worldwide.

VAP’s Medium/Long Term Volunteering (M/LTV) Programme gives you the chance to volunteer abroad from 1 to 12 months, working in a project organised by one of the many grassroots organisations that VAP co-operates with around the world. M/LTV is not only about work, but it is also a unique experience of combining living abroad with learning a new culture and getting to know the local people, while being deeply involved with a project and its aims.
